Before you can really understanding what makes this race special, you need to know what the race is all about. The race follows the Tour du Mont Blanc, that means it goes through France, Italy, and Switzerland. 

The average distance for this race is about 171 km and it is widely regarded today as the toughest race on Earth. That’s because of the elevation gain of around 10,040 meters. 


The exciting part, and what you should be looking at when you take part in this race, is the week-long festival that accompanies it. The festival takes part in Chamonix, France. The race has one of the largest number of starters in the globe with around 2,500 racers.

Thus far, the fastest time ever recorded in this race was in 2003 and the time was 20:05:59. There are other times when the race has been cut short due to bad weather which led to the winners being announced earlier. 

How to Qualify

You need to be ready for this race, like any other race in the globe. This one, however, is pretty difficult because you need to qualify in order to participate. You have to meet strict entry and qualification factors to take part in the race. However, these requirements are in place to ensure the safety of participants.


The qualifying factors are, overall, determined by gathering enough race points from the qualifying trail races for at least the last two years.

2020 UTMB Race

The 2020 UTMB Race, will take place in August along the same route. However, that’s if the plans remain the same as they were before COVID-19 spread across the world. 

The dates are still set for the 24th – 30th of August. And this year, a lot has changed as registration has only been going on online, through the official website, due to the global pandemic. 

However, there are also smaller sections that you can take part in as well. rHere are some of the races that you can take part in 2020.

  • 171 km & 10 300 m ascent
  • 300 km & 25 000 m ascent
  • 56 km & 3 500 m ascent
  • 145 km & 9 100 m ascent
