A Close Look at Tennis Star Bob Bryan

Robert Bryan is a former American Professional Tennis Player who has so far won 23 Grand Slam titles, 7 of them in Mixed doubles and 16 in men’s doubles. He became a professional in 1998, and together with his twin brother Mike have been the world’s No.1 Players in doubles. 

They first achieved this top ranking back in 2003, and they were named the ATP team for the decade from 2000-2009. They then became the second men’s doubles team to ever compete in the Golden Slam in 2012, during the Olympic Summer Games in London.


However, in 2018, he was forced to end his season very early as he suffered a hip surgery in the month of August. Read on to learn more about tennis star, Bob Bryan.

College Years

Bob Bryan played from 1997 to 1998 for Stanford University and he went on to help Cardinal to win back-to-back NCAA Championships, and in 1998, he won the “Triple Crown”, when he took the NCAA Doubles which he did with his brother Mike.

His ATP Tour

Together with his twin brother Mike, Bryan has around 116 doubles titles, and in 2005 both of them made it to the finals in all of the 4 Grand Slam tournaments. This was only the second time that the men’s doubles team had done this in an open era.


In 2006, the brothers further won Wimbledon as well as the Australian Open and then completed a career in the Grand Slam. They won the 2012 US Open and then followed this win with 3 major’s in2013, which means that they held 4 titles at the same time.

As a team, they have managed to make the top-ranked team at least 10 times, between 2003 and 2014. They frequently participate in U.S. Davis Cup teams as well. 

World Team Tennis

As brothers, they kicked off their World Team Tennis career in 1999 while in Idaho Sneakers. Later on, they went to play for the Newport Beach Breakers back in 2004. Next, they played for the Kansas City Explores from 2005 until 2012.


In 2013, they played for the Texas Wild, and then the San Diego Aviators in 2014. They played with the California Dream back in 2015, and then the Washington Kastles between the years 2016 and 2018.

Off-Court life

Bob Bryan is not just a tennis player, and sometimes he doubles up in acting, among other skills. He guest-starred on the show, 8 Simple Rules, and also featured on the cover of Making Music Magazine in 2010. 

Their father also wrote a book about his sons titled: The Formula: Raising Your Child to be a Champion. 

His Personal Life

Bryan is married to a Florida Attorney, Michelle Alvarez. They got married in North Miami Beach in 2010, and they have three children: Richard Charles “Richie”, Robert Blake “Bobby Jr.”, and Micaela.

Bryan, together with his twin Mike, have won the most Davis Cup matches of all time, and of all the doubles teams in the world. They hold the record of the most years played in the Davis Cup for the U.S., and they are also holders of the highest singles ties in their career.


Clearly, Bob Bryan has achieved plenty of achievements in his tennis career. Currently, he is still active, but we cannot forget how much has already been able to achieve, and together with his brother, they will forever be in the Tennis Hall of Fame for all of their achievements.
